Massive stars lead short, spectacular lives. This composite X-ray (blue)/optical (red and green) image reveals dramatic details of a portion of the Crescent Nebula, a giant gaseous shell created by powerful winds blowing from the massive star HD 192163 (a.k.a. WR 136, the star is out of the field of view to the lower right).

After only 4.5 million years (one-thousandth the age of the Sun), HD 192163 began its headlong rush toward a supernova catastrophe. First it expanded enormously to become a red giant and ejected its outer layers at about 20,000 miles per hour. Two hundred thousand years later - a blink of the eye in the life of a normal star - the intense radiation from the exposed hot, inner layer of the star began pushing gas away at speeds in excess of 3 million miles per hour!

When this high speed "stellar wind" rammed into the slower red giant wind, a dense shell was formed. In the image, a portion of the shell is shown in red. The force of the collision created two shock waves: one that moved outward from the dense shell to create the green filamentary structure, and one that moved inward to produce a bubble of million degree Celsius X-ray emitting gas (blue). The brightest X-ray emission is near the densest part of the compressed shell of gas, indicating that the hot gas is evaporating matter from the shell. The massive star HD 192183 that has produced the nebula appears as the bright dot at the center of the full-field image.

HD 192163 will likely explode as a supernova in about a hundred thousand years. This image enables astronomers to determine the mass, energy, and composition of the gaseous shell around this pre-supernova star. An understanding of such environments provides important data for interpreting observations of supernovas and their remnants.

Θεοδόσιος Α' ο Ισπανός χασάπης

Ο αυτοκράτορας Flavius Theodosius ή Θεοδόσιος Α' (Ισπανία 346 – Μιλάνο 395), o αποκαλούμενος "Μέγας", κάθισε στο θρόνο από το 379 έως το 395, μόνος αυτοκράτορας από το 392 και μετά, ενώ διαδοχικά συναυτοκράτορας με το Γρατιανό και Ουαλεντινιανό Β' μέχρι το 383 και κατόπιν μόνο με τον Ουαλεντινιανό Β'. Ικανότατος στρατιωτικός, ουσιαστικά άσκησε τη διοίκηση της αυτοκρατορίας όσο ο Ουαλεντινιανός Β' ήταν ανήλικος. Παντρεύτηκε την αδερφή του Ουαλεντινιανού Γάλλα, κόρη της Ιουστίνας. Καταγόταν από ρωμαϊκή οικογένεια της ιβηρικής χερσονήσου.
Αντιμετώπισε επιτυχώς τις βαρβαρικές εισβολές και την διείσδυση Γότθων κ.ά., οι οποίοι απειλούσαν ήδη την αυτοκρατορία με διάλυση (κάτι που για το δυτικό τμήμα του κράτους έγινε πραγματικότητα εκατό περίπου χρόνια μετά), και στερέωσε την αυτοκρατορία παραδίδοντας στους απογόνους κράτος στα όρια αυτού του Μεγάλου Κωνσταντίνου, με στρατιωτική και οικονομική ισχύ και, ακόμη περισσότερο, ενιαία και ισχυρή πολιτειακή ιδεολογία.

Στον οπισθότυπο του νομίσματος που κόπηκε από τον Ουαλεντινινό II, απεικονίζονται ο Ουαλεντινιανός και ο Θεοδόσιος με άλω και τα σύμβολα της σφαίρας και του σταυρού.

Ο αυτοκράτορας Θεοδόσιος Ι με άλω, σε σύγχρονο αργυρό δίσκο (Βασιλική Ακαδημία Επιστημών, Μαδρίτη)
Κατά τη διάρκεια μιας λαϊκής εξέγερσης στη Θεσσαλονίκη και της δολοφονίας του επικεφαλής της φρουράς Γότθου Βουθέριχου το 389, έδωσε την εντολή για την εκτέλεση 7.000 αμάχων (ή 15.000 κατά τους Κεδρηνό, Θεοφάνη, Μωϋσή Χωρηνό). Για την πράξη του αυτή προέβη σε "δημόσια απολογία" μπροστά στον αρχιεπίσκοπο Μεδιολάνων Αμβρόσιο.
Στις 27 Φεβρουαρίου του 380 απαγόρευσε όλες τις Θρησκείες εκτός της χριστιανικής: «Επιθυμούμε όλα τα διάφορα υπήκοα έθνη... ν’ ακολουθούν την Θρησκεία που παραδόθηκε στους Ρωμαίους από τον άγιο απόστολο Πέτρο...» («Θεοδοσιανός Κώδιξ» 16. 1. 2). Στις 2 Μαΐου του επόμενου έτους εξέδωσε το λεγόμενο "έδικτο κατά των αποστατών" («Θεοδοσιανός Κώδιξ» 16. 7. 1) με το οποίο τιμωρούσε με πλήρη στέρηση δικαιωμάτων δικαιοπραξίας όλους τους πρώην χριστιανούς που επέστρεφαν στην Εθνική Θρησκεία. Στις 21 Δεκεμβρίου του 382 απαγόρευσε με ποινή θανάτου και δήμευση της περιουσίας των ενόχων Εθνικών (που χαρακτηρίζονται «παράφρονες» και «ιερόσυλοι»), κάθε μορφή θυσίας, μαντικής, ψαλμωδιών προς τιμή των Θεών ή τις απλές επισκέψεις σε αρχαίους Ναούς («Θεοδοσιανός Κώδιξ» 16. 10. 7).

Υποστηρίζεται ότι το 383 διέταξε την κατεδάφιση ή το σφράγισμα Εθνικών Ιερών και υπέγραψε νέα απαγόρευση των θυσιών, ενώ στις 24 Φεβρουαρίου του 391 ανανέωσε την πλήρη απαγόρευση των θυσιών, των επισκέψεων σε Εθνικούς Ναούς: "Κανείς δεν θα μολυνθεί με θυσίες και σφάγια, κανείς δεν θα πλησιάσει ή θα εισέλθει σε Ναούς, ούτε θα σηκώσει τα μάτια σε εικόνες φτιαγμένες από ανθρώπινο χέρι, διαφορετικά θα είναι ένοχος μπροστά στους ανθρώπινους και τους θεϊκούς νόμους" («Θεοδοσιανός Κώδιξ» 16. 10. 10).
Πάντως, σύμφωνα και με τις παραπομπές του (οπωσδήποτε όχι χριστιανού) Κυρ. Σιμόπουλου και άλλων ερευνητών, συγκεκριμένο διάταγμα για κατεδάφιση Ελληνικών ναών (με μικρή σχετικά εφαρμογή στην πράξη και αυτού ακόμη) εξεδόθη από τον Αρκάδιο και μετά, όχι από τον Μέγα Θεοδόσιο.
Στις 5 και 6 Σεπτεμβρίου του 394 εξουδετέρωσε την υπό τους Βίριο Νικόμαχο Φλαβιανό και Αρβογάστη τελευταία προσπάθεια των Ρωμαίων Εθνικών να σταματήσουν τον Χριστιανισμό, νικώντας τον στρατό τους στην φονική μάχη του Φρίγδου και εξοντώνοντας μετά όλους τους πρωτεργάτες της ανταρσίας.
Η βασιλεία του Θεοδοσίου δεν παρουσιάζει συνταρακτικές επιτυχίες, ωστόσο ήλθε σε εποχή εξαιρετικά δύσκολη για την Αυτοκρατορία, και συνετέλεσε αποφασιστικά στη διάσωσή της. Ήταν ικανός στρατηλάτης και διπλωμάτης και σε όλη την διάρκεια της βασιλείας του πολεμούσε συνεχώς με επιτυχία εναντίον εξωτερικών εχθρών. Κατά τη διάρκεια της βασιλείας του ακολούθησε αδιάλλακτη θρησκευτική πολιτική στη διάρκεια της οποίας έθεσε εκτός νόμου τις αρχαίες λατρείες. Η αρχαία θρησκεία επέζησε βέβαια τουλάχιστον ως την εποχή του Ιουστινιανού.
Έως σήμερα είναι διαδεδομένη η άποψη ότι ο Μέγας Θεοδόσιος απαγόρευσε την τέλεση των Ολυμπιακών Αγώνων, με την αιτιολογία ότι είχαν πάρει πλέον μια καθαρά ωφελιμιστική κατεύθυνση, με επιδείξεις μονομάχων, θεάματα τσίρκων και εκτεταμένο επαγγελματισμό, θεάματα που ήταν ασύμβατα με την νοοτροπία του Χριστιανισμού. ("Η μεγαλύτερη ευεργεσία για τους Ολυμπιακούς Αγώνες", γράφει ο π. Γ. Μεταλληνός στο έργο του "Παγανιστικός Ελληνισμός ή Ελληνορθοδοξία;", "ήταν η παύση τους ["στο πλαίσιο όμως της απαγορεύσεως κάθε εθνικής θρησκευτικής εκδηλώσεως", σημειώνει και παραπέμπει], όπως είχαν καταντήσει".) Σύμφωνα με έρευνες νεωτέρων βυζαντινολόγων (Howell, Robinson κ.ά.· βλ. και Κορομηλά Μαριάννα, "Εν τω Σταδίω"), όμως, δεν απαγόρευσε ο Μέγας Θεοδόσιος τους Ολυμπιακούς Αγώνες, αλλά απλώς απαγόρευσε τις θυσίες κατά την διάρκειά τους. Μάλιστα, οι Αγώνες συνεχίστηκαν για περίπου 30 χρόνια ακόμη και ο λόγος που έσβησαν (όχι διεκόπησαν - οι συγκεκριμένοι ιστορικοί ομιλούν για φθορά και σβήσιμο) ήταν η έλλειψη χρημάτων (χορηγών) και κάποιες φυσικές καταστροφες, όπως η πυρκαγιά στον ναό στης Ολυμπίας.
Ο Θεοδόσιος θέλοντας να εξουδετερώσει την εσωτερική διάσπαση του χριστιανισμού, συγκάλεσε, όπως και ο Κωνσταντίνος, σύνοδο στην Κωνσταντινούπολη (Β’ Οικουμενική) το 381 για την καταπολέμηση των Αρειανών –που δεν είχαν εκλείψει– η οποία συμπλήρωσε το Σύμβολο της Πίστης.
Πεθαίνοντας ο Θεοδόσιος τον Ιανουάριο του 395, σε ηλικία 50 ετών, κληροδότησε την αυτοκρατορία στους δύο γιους του: στον Αρκάδιο, το ανατολικό τμήμα και στον Ονώριο το δυτικό. Από τότε τα δύο τμήματα της αυτοκρατορίας ακολούθησαν διαφορετικές πορείες, γι’ αυτό πολλοί ιστορικοί θεωρούν το έτος 395 απαρχή της βυζαντινής ιστορίας.
